Biomimetic Study of Non-smooth Surfaces in Highly Viscous Fluids

This Royal Society UK–China Joint Project was led on the Chinese side by Professor Luquan Ren from the Key Laboratory of Terrain-Machine Bionics Engineering, Ministry of Education, Jilin University, with Professor Jianqiao Li and Professor Zhiwu Han as major participants. The UK side was led by Professor Yuying Yan from the School of Engineering, Nottingham Trent University, with Professor C. R. Gentle and Professor J. B. Hull as major participants. The project was carried out from 2003 to 2005. The project focused on the biomimetic characteristics of biological non-smooth surfaces in highly viscous media, with particular emphasis on their anti-adhesion, detachment, and drag-reduction behavior compared with those in ordinary media. The research results were further applied to the development of drag-reducing components for operation in highly viscous media.
