The IABS is the highest-level academic institution and think tank of the ISBE. Established in July 2025 in Beijing, China, its mission is to lead the sustainable and healthy development of bionic science and technology worldwide by selecting leading talents, recognizing groundbreaking achievements, and fostering international collaboration and academic exchange.
The IABS operates within the framework of the ISBE and serves as its highest academic body. While the ISBE functions as a broader international professional society for the global bionics community, the IABS serves as its core academic leadership body.
ISBE Fellows are the highest academic honor in the field of bionic science and engineering and is conferred as a lifetime distinction. Applicants are required to submit an application together with supporting materials and must be nominated by two ISBE Fellows. The preliminary evaluation is conducted by the Fellows Selection Committee, and the final evaluation is carried out by correspondence ballot among all ISBE Fellows. The list of newly elected ISBE Fellows is submitted by the IABS to the Executive Board of the ISBE for review and approval.
The IBSTA is the highest science and technology award in the field of bionic science and technology. It is intended to recognize researchers who have made internationally recognized outstanding contributions in basic research, technological invention, achievement transfer, and engineering application. The award is presented once every three years, with one award granted each time. The selection is organized by the IABS and is subject to review and approval by the ISBE.
